SMEC has been selected as the Project Management and Construction Supervision Consultant (PMCS) for Phase 5 of Dar Es Salaam's Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) program.

This marks SMEC’s continued involvement in one of Tanzania’s most ambitious urban transportation initiatives, following successful work on Phases 1 and 3. Designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility for Dar Es Salaam’s rapidly growing population, the project will play a crucial role in enhancing the city’s public transportation network.

BRT Phase 5 covers a 26.4 km corridor, extending from the Kigamboni Bridge to Ubungo, with major connections along Kilwa Road, Mandela Road, and Segerea Terminal. This will deliver approximately thirty-four bus stations, seven feeder stations, three depots and three terminals, enhancing connectivity into key terminals from earlier phases. In addition, a new 3.8km access road will connect Dar Es Salaam Port to the network, enhancing connections to critical industrial areas. It is anticipated that the project construction will be divided into three separate Lots.

SMEC will oversee the construction management and supervision of the works, ensuring compliance with the detailed engineering designs, technical specifications, and contract requirements. The scope of services includes overseeing the quality of construction, managing project timelines, and ensuring that safety and environmental standards are upheld throughout the project lifecycle.

As part of the design review process, SMEC has been tasked with initiating hydrological studies for parts of the alignment to enhance flood resilience. A key focus of the project will be the integration of climate resilience measures, particularly at critical infrastructure points such as the Msimbazi River Bridge, which has experienced flooding in recent years.

This new engagement reflects the ongoing collaboration between SMEC and TANROADS and a commitment to delivering high quality infrastructure for the people of Dar Es Salaam.
