SMEC in Swaziland
In June 2012, Vela VKE (a professional consulting engineering company) joined the SMEC Group. SMEC, via the addition of Vela VKE, has expertise in Swaziland in a wide range of civil engineering disciplines, particularly roads and highways, structures, water engineering, solid waste management and environmental management.
SMEC led the consortium which undertook the design and construction of Maguga Dam. The 115 m high dam was the second initiative undertaken by the Komati Basin Water Authority to increase land use and productivity through irrigated agriculture. The Maguga Dam received the South African Institution of Civil Engineering award for most outstanding civil engineering achievement in the International Category in 2001.
In north-east Swaziland, SMEC provided all engineering services for the Komati River Bridge, across the Komati River, near Piggs Peak. The 305 m, seven-span continuous concrete bridge replaced an existing bridge which was expected to be submerged as a result of water released by the Maguga Dam. SMEC’s services included: foundation investigation, environmental impact assessment, preliminary and detailed design, contract documentation, contract administration and construction supervision.
