Seqwater’s North Pine Dam Improvement Project has reached a major milestone, appointing SMEC to provide detailed design services for the recently announced North Pine Dam Staged Strengthening project.

This is a vital project on one of South East Queensland’s important water supply dams, owned and operated by Seqwater, and is focused on ensuring the dam continues to operate safely and provide water security into the future.

SMEC’s Queensland Manager for Water, Dams and Hydropower, Tim McConnell, is pleased to support Seqwater in the detailed design of the project, “We are looking forward to working collaboratively with Seqwater as the detailed design on the project gets underway. We have assembled a highly experienced team, including global specialists who can address any challenges and realise opportunities for innovation and value-based solutions,” Tim shared.

“In our experience, working collaboratively with our clients to enable a whole-of-asset-lifecycle approach to meet modern dam safety standards and fully consider long-term operational requirements is a key aspect of success. Particularly when considering vitally important water infrastructure assets, like North Pine Dam, which South East Queenslanders rely on for safe, secure water supply.”

Seqwater is delighted to welcome SMEC to collaborate on the North Pine Dam Staged Strengthening project, as part of its Dam Improvement Program. SMEC’s appointment brings valuable expertise to the project, and Seqwater look forward to a productive and successful partnership.

SMEC will provide globally recognised specialists with contemporary local knowledge and expertise in concrete dam strengthening, independent verification, engineering geology, and construction management. SMEC will also apply a digitally enabled approach to enhance collaboration, visualise construction sequencing, and support long-term management of the asset.

SMEC, a member of the Surbana Jurong Group, is supported by our sister company, Robert Bird Group, for construction sequencing, temporary works design and BIM management, and global hydropower specialists Lombardi as the nominated ‘Challenge Team’ who will interrogate the design assumption and funnel innovations.

Design work is now underway and SMEC will continue to provide support to Seqwater during the construction phase, which is expected to commence in 2025.
