SMEC consulted with the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TRM) to design a detailed 4-lane highway between the new section of the highway at Traveston and Woondum. SMEC provided enhanced safety and environmental measures to protect road users and surrounding fauna and flora. With considerate cost-saving measures implemented and the project being delivered four months ahead of schedule, SMEC created long-lasting beneficial impacts on the completion of the project.

The A$384 million Section C Traveston to Wondum project forms part of the Bruce Highway – Cooroy to Curra Upgrade. Section C will deliver a new 4-lane divided highway between the new section of highway at Traveston and Woondum. The design is required to meet capacity and efficiency demands for long-term road freight and transport needs in the region, with the highway also providing a Q100 (1 in a 100-year event) flood immunity. During the construction of the project, (TMR) faced limited safety measures implemented to protect road users as well as the surrounding fauna and flora.

Implementing safer and environmentally conscious decisions

To overcome the challenges faced by TMR, SMEC used their specialist team of Engineers and Planners to provide a detailed design for the implementation of a safer 4-lane divided highway between the new Section C of the highway at Traveston and Woondum. SMEC provided enhanced environmental measures to protect surrounding fauna and flora, through environmental considerations and approvals for creek diversion, fauna management, offsets, erosion, sediment control, and species management.

Successful project delivery

SMEC consulted with the TMR to design a detailed 4-lane highway between the new section of the highway at Traveston and Woondum. SMEC’s detailed design provides safer road user conditions and improved community access, with the project being delivered four months ahead of the agreed schedule.

On the completion of the project, SMEC’s successful design provided enhanced long-lasting outcomes, whilst achieving cost savings considerations compared to the preliminary design. Delivering savings through improvements in alignments, earthworks, formation width, pavement and bridge designs, and expanding the use of wire rope safety barriers. Successfully working with TMR, SMEC agree on the inclusion of a recommended asphalt surfacing that would improve whole life cost and other beneficial outcomes.

The outcomes on completion of the project include:

  • Realignment of 14 km of the Bruce Highway between Traveston and Woondum.
  • Delivery of 10.5 km of new 4-lane highway
  • Integration with two existing interchanges
  • 13 bridges including major waterway crossing structures; and
  • Q100 (1 in a 100-year event) flood immunity).
