SMEC’s donation for earthquake victims in West Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra Province, Indonesia has been completed with the delivery of relief goods for nearly 600 individuals.

Carried out in partnership with local non-government organization HSI Abdullah Roy Peduli, the relief packages included food, sanitary kits and other basic necessities. Separate packages contained items that addressed the needs of pregnant women, infants and elderly persons.

The NGO formally received SMEC’s funding support to procure the relief packages during a turnover ceremony last July 2022.

“We thank SMEC for trusting us to distribute the relief goods and to the local volunteers who helped us in the program,” wrote HSI Abdullah Roy Peduli officials Mujiman Abu Ibrahim and Heru Nur Ihsan in a completion report submitted recently. “May Allah reward all of you, give you health and protect you always.”

The 6.2 magnitude earthquake that rocked West Sumatra early this year caused heavy damage to property and infrastructure and displaced thousands of residents. Months later, appeals for emergency relief remained the top priority as many residents were still confined in evacuation centres due to the challenges encountered in rebuilding their homes or relocating them.

“SMEC’s response to this call for help is in line with one of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) priorities which is to provide emergency relief during times of natural disaster,” said Libby Paholski, Chairperson SEA & Pacific CSR Committee and Functional General Manager Social Development and Environment Group ASEAN. “We hope to build on this successful partnership with HSI Peduli and deliver programs that will have a lasting impact on the community.”
