SMEC has secured the role for design review and construction management for a significant project aimed at enhancing water treatment facilities in the Philippines.

This project is in partnership with Maynilad Water Services, Inc., one of the major water authority concessions operating in Metro Manila. The primary focus will be the improvement of five existing water treatment facilities situated in densely populated areas of Metro Manila, including the Bagbag, Congressional, Project 7, Tatalon, and Paco Water Recycling Facilities.

 

The main objective of this project is to enhance these existing facilities to comply with the revised General Effluent Standards of the Philippines. The goal is to improve the quality of water in the surrounding bodies of water and upgrading the sewage treatment in densely populated areas. These enhancements will be executed through a design and construct contract, covering a range of capacities from 0.4 million liters per day (MLD) to 10.4 MLD.

 

SMEC’s services, spanning an anticipated 18 months, involve a comprehensive review of the design documentation for the upgrades and active supervision during the construction phase. This includes ensuring that the designs meet the required standards and specifications, as well as overseeing construction to guarantee adherence to quality and efficiency.

 

This project marks SMEC’s first significant engagement with a major water authority concession in the Philippines. While SMEC’s local specialists will provide majority of the project’s expertise, it may also leverage international resources when necessary, drawing on the company’s global capabilities.
