The utility GIS provides a digital platform and tool for ECG to plan, manage and efficiently operate its network to meet global utility management standards. The new systems will improve customer experience through enhanced power supply reliability, better supply quality and reduced service response times. Other benefits include rapid response to unplanned outages, breakdowns and maintenance checks. The system will also inform future strategic planning and expansion of ECG electricity distribution.
Control Room
In attendance at the inauguration were board members of ECG, representatives from MiDA, MCC’s resident country director, staff of ECG, constructors and consultants.
“ECG previously relied on stand-alone computerized system to locate and identify its assets and customers in the field therefore this new approach will help manage its asset and better manage its business processes” Board Chair of ECG Mr. Keli Gadzekpo.
SMEC provided Programme Management Services such as migration of data into an Oracle Spatial Database, the capture of underground assets, training, and the field validation of infrastructure assets including power lines, substations, underground cables, transformers, switches and customer service wires.
The team played an important role to facilitate improved workflow and execution of activities, at a time when strict Covid regulations prohibited on site visitations and inspections in Accra which was a contract requirement. Working closely with the client, SMEC to develop a solution bespoke to their need.
The new system collects and analyses data in real time, providing reliable geospatial and location information with unique geographic coordinates of various assets (including meters, poles, transmission lines and distribution transformers). Mapping out all these assets enables swift and remote decision making, reducing cost and time spent visiting site.
