infrastructure
SMEC has been appointed by local Tanzanian company Mwananchi Engineering and Construction Ltd (MECCO), as the consultant for the Preliminary and Detailed Engineering Design of two major roads in Zanzibar: the Fumba-Kisauni Road (12 km) and the Tunguu-Makunduchi Road (48 km).

Supported by United Kingdom Export Finance (UKEF), this project is a crucial initiative of Zanzibar’s Vision 2050 to boost connectivity and economic growth.

The estimated project construction duration is three years, with the design phase set to be completed within six months from commencement. SMEC will mobilise key road design experts located in the region to work closely with MECCO and local stakeholders.  The team will utilise their extensive local knowledge to translate best practice design strategies and ensure cost-effective, sustainable development solutions.

Salient Features:

  • Expansion of current two-lane roads into four-lane dual carriageways.
  • Inclusion of modern infrastructure, such as street lighting, pedestrian paths, and dedicated bus stops.
  • Enhanced access to rural communities, supporting the local economy.

The project builds on SMEC’s history of delivering infrastructure projects in Zanzibar having recently led the design for the islands first flyovers, as part of the urban road’s rehabilitation program.  Regional Director for Clients and Partnerships Nasser Harrasy commented,

This project will introduce optimized design standards that consider projected traffic growth, safety enhancements, and multimodal transport solutions. SMEC aims to deliver added value through sustainable approaches and local capacity-building initiatives to benefit Zanzibar's communities long-term."
