BOST currently has six storage depots complemented by pipeline linkages at strategic locations in 6 out of 10 regions throughout the country. Sienna Services Limited were engaged as a contractor, with SMEC as an engineering partner.
Challenge
SMEC was engaged to engineer and develop preliminary designs for the installation of the 26-inch multi-liquid fuel underground pipeline, approximately 270km in length from Accra Plains Depot (APD) to the Kumasi Depot. The multi-fuel pipeline also included safe operation and transportation through selected optimum pipeline routes.
Solution
Front End Engineering Design (FEED) of the project included but was not limited to:
- Process Design
- Pipeline, Mechanical & Piping Design
- E&I Design
- Civil and Structural Design
- Safety Studies (HAZID/HAZOP/SIL/QRA/CAPEX/OPEX)
The design team also conducted a three-day virtual training session with BOST, covering project design protocols, engineering standards, detailed explanation of deliverables, methodology, interface with other disciplines, hydraulic analysis, and software utilization.
“Working with SMEC International on the 270 km Multifuel Pipeline FEED Project for BOST, the biggest FEED project yet, was another successful project. The SMEC team was dedicated to providing quality deliverables conforming to best practices in the global oil & gas industry, all within the project schedule and budget.” – Prince Abakah (Technical Lead – Sienna Services)
Impact
The pipeline provides safe and efficient transportation of petroleum products to Accra. Prior to this, distribution wholly depend on the reliability and availability of trucking services. The pipeline reduces the time required to deliver products to the region, making petroleum more accessible to the community.
