Transition
The UK has been harnessing hydropower since 1878, when the first hydroelectric generator powered Cragside House in Northumberland. Today, hydropower remains an essential part of the UK’s renewable energy mix, contributing stable, flexible and low-carbon electricity generation. As the UK works towards a net zero grid, hydropower plays a crucial role by providing energy storage and reliability, ensuring power availability even when solar and wind output fluctuate.

SMEC is pleased to announce its membership in the British Hydropower Association (BHA), the UK’s leading trade body dedicated to promoting and advancing hydropower’s role in the country’s transition to a low-carbon energy future. This strategic move aligns with SMEC’s growing presence in the UK and Europe, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable, resilient energy solutions.

SMEC has a 75-year legacy in dams and hydropower engineering, delivering world-class projects across high-head and low-head hydropower schemes, pumped storage, dam safety and hydropower modernisation. By joining BHA, SMEC strengthens its collaboration with industry stakeholders, policymakers and developers to drive innovation, policy development and best practices in hydropower engineering.

Hydropower is the workhorse of renewable energy, delivering reliability and flexibility for a decarbonised grid. As the UK accelerates its net-zero journey, SMEC is proud to join BHA and contribute our expertise to the future of hydropower in the region.
