SMEC has successfully delivered a project for the Government of Tanzania, through the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Ltd (TANESCO), to carry out Feasibility Studies and Distribution Master Plan Studies for four major cities/load centres in Tanzania. These four regions have an estimated population of around 10 million people.

The project aimed to facilitate Tanzania’s economic growth by providing cheap and reliable access to electricity to customers. Another benefit is the reduction in wood fuel consumption which significantly reduces CO2 emissions.

In addition to preparing the master plan and feasibility study, our role also included training TANESCO staff to build the capability needed to meet the increasing load growth for the next 25 years, as well as the subsequent distribution network development requirements.

This project is another testament to SMEC’s strong presence and long history of involvement in the power sector in Tanzania, and its successful implementation has created further opportunities for upcoming projects with our client.
