Meet our 2020 Australian Engineering Excellence Award winners:
InQuik Bridge System (SMEC, InQuik)
Winner – Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Canberra 2020
The InQuik Bridge System is an Australian developed, semi-modular bridge solution. SMEC and InQuik Bridging Systems co-developed this new system through extensive engineering development, validation, and prototyping to maximise quality through pre-fabrication, ease of transport of lightweight forms and simple on-site concrete placement. The innovation allows for the delivery of large programs through local labour, keeping funds in the local community and delivering premium, reliable and long-term infrastructure in a cost-effective manner.
Sydney Metro Northwest Stations (Mott MacDonald, SMEC, KBR)
Winner – Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Sydney 2020
The Sydney Metro Northwest project has revolutionised the public transport system in Sydney, delivering Australia’s first fully automated passenger service and representing a benchmark for quality of infrastructure. The Design Joint Venture, comprising SMEC, KBR and Mott MacDonald, delivered the detailed design for eight new metro stations which included three underground stations, three new open-cut suburban stations and two new elevated stations. It was also responsible for train stabling maintenance facilities, 36 kilometres of new metro track, overhead power systems and precinct civil works and car parks.
Albion Park Rail Bypass – Detailed Design (SMEC, Fulton Hogan)
Winner – Australian Engineering Excellence Awards Sydney 2020.
The Albion Park Rail Bypass (APRB) project will deliver a 9.8 kilometre, four-lane divided highway extension of the M1 Princes Motorway between Yallah and Oak Flats in New South Wales, Australia. SMEC was engaged by the construction contractor, Fulton Hogan, to provide detailed design services, including alignment, drainage, flooding, geotechnical, structural and pavement design. For its detailed design, SMEC delivered three key engineering innovations which addressed the challenging road alignment in geotechnical and hydraulic conditions.
Reas Beeston, Senior Engineer Geotechnics
Winner, Young Professional Engineer of the Year (Sydney)
Reas has made valuable contributions to the industry and profession across his ten-year career. His demonstrated resourcefulness, collaborative work ethic and innovation have supported the construction of more resilient and longer lasting infrastructure. Reas has pioneered the application of non-standard materials and methods for the benefit of the clients, contractors and projects he has been involved with.
The InQuik Bridge System and the Sydney Metro Northwest Stations project were also selected as finalists for the national Sir William Hudson Award, the highest honour for a project awarded by Engineers Australia, set to be announced in November 2020.
