Improvement
SMEC has mobilised its team in Tanzania to undertake consultancy services across detailed design, tender assistance and construction supervision for the Arusha–Holili Road Improvement Project.

The Arusha-Holili Road Improvement Project will reduce travel time between major towns and improve access to Kilimanjaro International Airport from both Moshi and Arusha, through road widening and construction of new bridges between Tengeru and Holili.

The improvements will promote a reliable and efficient international corridor and gateway to the northern region of Tanzania, thereby contributing to socioeconomic development, enhancing road capacity, improving traffic safety, and reducing vehicle operating costs.

The Arusha-Holili Road Improvement Project is expected to significantly enhance the well-being of the community between Arusha and Moshi.

SMEC’s role includes both detailed design as well as site supervision for roads and bridge works, aligned with the Roads and Highways sector’s core strengths. The work components are split into three packages:

Package 1

  • Tengeru-Usa and Moshi sections, dualling to four lanes (approx. 17.7km)

Package 2

  • New Kikafu Bridge and approach road

Package 3

  • Safety measures at existing Kikafu Bridge
    • Installation of traffic calming devices
    • Delineator, reflection sheet, lights
    • Widening of bridge superstructure
    • Installation of climbing lane
    • Redesign of geometric alignment of the approach section.

SMEC is responsible for the detailed road and bridge design, as well as on-site supervision, provided through the expertise and strength of the Roads and Highways team. The project is expected to be completed over the next four years followed by 36 months of Defect liability period.
