The 6.2 magnitude earthquake caused extensive damage in West Sumatera, particularly in the Regency of West Pasaman. The villages of Kajai and Simpang Timbo Abu were severely affected, with thousands of homes and buildings damaged and landslides hindering aid delivery. The disaster displaced hundreds of residents, caused injuries and resulted in the tragic loss of lives in Kajai village, followed by famine.
SDN 26 Talamau was among the critical facilities impacted. The school’s sanitation and toilet facilities were destroyed, forcing students to use a nearby river for their needs. The educational process was also disrupted, with classes held in emergency tents due to the damaged school buildings.
Recognising the urgent need for proper sanitation and educational resources, SMEC launched a follow-up initiative to rebuild and improve the school’s facilities. The new project aimed to educate students on hygiene and provide a safe, healthy learning environment. By constructing new sanitation facilities and supplying learning tools, SMEC sought to enhance the well-being and educational experience of the students at SDN 26 Talamau.
The project’s success was due to the strong collaboration between SMEC and HSIB, a non-profit organisation specialising in disaster management and recovery. HSIB ensured the prompt and efficient distribution of aid to the affected areas.
The new sanitation facilities and learning tools have significantly improved the lives of the students and teachers at SDN 26 Talamau. The upgraded facilities promote hygiene and health while creating a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning.
