SMEC has been chosen by the Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) to lead the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Resettlement Policy Framework for the 132kV Eastern Backbone Transmission Line.

The project will boost the reliability of power supply to the Central and Northern regions of Malawi and build the resilience of critical infrastructure. Planned upgrades to the network include the rehabilitation of 52 kilometers of 132 kV transmission lines, replacing wooden poles with steel-latticed towers along the Nkhoma-Nanjoka-Nkhotakota to Chintheche route in Nkhata Bay, and the Nkhotakota-Chinyama-Kanyika line.

 

The ESIA component is expected to take approximately 12 months and will involve a detailed analysis of the project’s potential impacts on the physical, biological, and socio-cultural environment.  Funding for the ESIA package was provided by Swedfund International.

 

The whole project area covers a total of 419.15Km. Extensive engagement will be needed with traditional authorities to manage temporary land acquisitions. SMEC will undertake GIS surveys to map key project areas to illustrate and communicate any risks or opportunities pertaining to biodiversity, ecosystems, land acquisition, displacement, and socioeconomic impacts.
