Chief Technical Principal – Power & Energy

With over 45 years of experience Malcolm Davies has a reputation for precision, reliability and experience across Australia’s power and energy industry.

 

After establishing his career in South Africa, Malcolm moved to Australia 25 years ago bringing his hands-on experience and passion for knowledge sharing.

 

As Chief Technical Principal for SMEC’s Energy team, Malcolm provides a wealth of experience spanning Electrical Engineering consulting, design, layout, maintenance and project management.

 

Malcolm has a special interest in feasibility studies for network connections, system augmentations, both greenfield and brownfield design, layout and refurbishments, primary, secondary and protection systems.

 

You name it he has done it.

 

With a career spanning over four decades, Malcolm has seen the huge technology changes that have evolved the electrical industry. Malcolm views the electrical industry as always charging ahead, particularly regarding sustainability as electrical engineers are at the forefront of providing renewal energy solutions.

 

Malcolm has worked on a range of projects for the power generation, transmission, distribution, traction, mining and heavy industries in a variety of commercial, project and design management roles. Across these projects, Malcolm was primarily responsibility for substation design, layout, installation and commissioning with knowledge of EHV, HV, MV, LV, renewable electrical power and switchgear systems, with vast experience in electrical substation, layouts, electrical fittings, safety clearances, maximum demand control systems, protection systems, HV cabling designs, Transformers, NER/X’s, Capactor Banks and Reactors, PLC’s, frequency drives and large motor control systems. 

 

During his time at SMEC, Malcolm has been integral to SMEC’s reputation as leading solar and wind farm designers. SMEC was responsible for designing some of the very first solar farms in Australia, and since then SMEC has established a broad portfolio, executing high performance results across the full breadth of the solar asset lifecycle.

 

Currently Malcolm is leading SMEC’s involvement with one of the largest wind farms in the country. With his strong technical skills, Malcolm prides himself on providing clients with the best solutions to their challenges.

 

Within SMEC and the industry, Malcolm is passionate about mentoring and training. Malcolm presents Continuous Professional Development (CPD) seminars for the power industry such as: 

  • Introduction to Substation Design – and lectures this subject for Post Graduate Course EEP245 at Queensland University of Technology (QUT). 
  • Insulation Coordination for Power Systems  
  • Underground Power Cable Systems and Engineering 
  • High Voltage Underground Power Cable Ratings and Calculations 

 

Malcolm holds a Master of Engineering Science – MEngSc (Power Supply Engineering) – QUT and is a member of the Institute of Engineers Australia in additional to being a Chartered Professional Engineering, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland and a member of the National Professional Engineers Register.
