James Phillis has been the Chief Executive Officer of SMEC Australia & New Zealand since 2018 and has been an integral member of SMEC’s executive and leadership team since 2014. He is responsible for providing leadership, direction, operational management and governance to the ANZ business.
James has undertaken leadership and governance roles on many large, significant infrastructure projects including recently Melbourne’s North East Link, Sydney Metro Northwest, NorthConnex, WestConnex M4 East IC and Snowy Hydro 2.0.
He is a highly qualified professional with more than 35 years’ experience, many in Senior Director and Executive roles establishing, building and leading engineering businesses across a broad range of industries. James has delivered projects and business growth in challenging and highly complex environments in Australia, New Zealand, UK, USA and Southeast Asia.

Committee
SMEC’s Management Committee has primary authority for the management and monitoring of SMEC’s operations, and the implementation of the Company Strategy subject to policies and procedures approved by the Board of Directors. The Management Committee is comprised of senior individuals with extensive experience in strategic and operational planning.
