Energy Connect
The EnergyConnect project is the core component of the Integrated System Plan (ISP) developed by the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO), enabling greater energy sharing within Australian markets. SMEC’s geotechnical team is working alongside TransGrid to provide geotechnical investigation services on the project and solutions to overcome significant variations in the local terrain.

Trunk Road 9/1 (Route N1) Widening Project
In May 2013, the Western Cape Government’s Department of Transport and Public Works appointed SMEC South Africa to provide the full scope of professional services for the Trunk Road 9/1 (Route N1) Widening – a freeway improvement project aimed at reducing traffic congestion and improving traffic safety over 8 km of freeway between Jip de Jager Avenue and Durban Road in Cape Town.

Sukkur – Multan Motorway
The 392 km Sukkur to Multan Motorway is a critical element of the Peshawar to Karachi Motorway Route. A lifeline for Pakistan’s economy, it is a high speed (120 km/h), controlled access, six-lane modern motorway that forms part of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor. The motorway was opened to traffic in November 2019 and made operational by March 2020.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel, Bangladesh
The Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Tunnel (or Karnaphuli Tunnel) is a 3.4 km long, twin underwater road tunnel in the port city of Chattogram, Bangladesh. It is the first under-river road tunnel in South Asia. The tunnel has a 10.6 m internal diameter and has a minimal clearance to the Karnaphuli Riverbed of 31m. It was constructed using the slurry shield tunnelling method due to the sandy, silty soils in the region.
